about

Joe & Co, my contemporary Barbers shop format on Peter Street Soho, sets out manifesto of men’s hair: forward thinking, intelligent and innovative (as opposed to your traditional barber space). The fact it's in Soho is utterly critical to my work.   I’m always here, and Soho’s energy is part of the life blood of my creativity. I am inspired daily, sometimes by, historical references, fashion & street culture, magazines and often just passing someone on Wardour Street can give me a fresh flow of ideas. This tangible energy feeds directly into all walks of my creative output. This is a varied roster of skills and liaisons.   Technically I am an all rounder and happily switch between scissor and clipper work. I cut hair in the salon, run the businesses which includes two salons with forty staff. I also teach weekly in the shops. A portion of my time is spent on editorial and celebrity based hair shoots and events.   I consult on brands from a fashion & style and hair perspective, collaborate on articles for GQ / Esquire in regards to hair and styling, work with non fashion brands such as Guiness about their marketing and brand presence for example.     My Modus Operandi is straight forward and direct. I have a solid background in hairdressing with a keen eye for detail, so am comfortable tolisten to what the client wants and translate that into a finished product. I am very focused on (the overall look of the hair with a clients style and resources), and am always willing to talk through options and ideas. This usually results in an agreeable joint creation. "It is all about understanding shape and form, it's like architecture - the key is to listen to the client and work with what you have. Clean, classic, but with contemporary edge. Note from Tom Stubbs I’ve worked with Mills since 1993 on various men’s hair style projects. He approaches a mans head of hair, situation/context and works it as an art director, not simply a hairdresser. His skills and experienceteamed with an over-arching vision are what sets him apart. I use him for both my film actor clients and person art/style based projects and he is my No.1 choice of for my creative teams. He also has a charming, unassuming character, which is however clearly underpinned by a worldliness, which Mills calmly exudes. Super handy traits when dealing with high end male performer/talent egos, and the like. Joe Mills hits both head on. Whether I'm looking for advice on how to camouflage thinning or what to ask your barber for to get Ryan Gosling's new chop, Joe has the tips and product recommendations I need."
